3. Corporations shop specifically to children and their possible vulnerabilities with the intention of undermining parental authority and responsibility.

Corporations intentionally drive a wedge between the parent and child over a specified product. Parents who say, "No," and strive to set boundaries are seen as unintelligent and unfair. Today, the child's peer group may as well have an umbilical cord tied directly to global conglomerates, production them primary authorities in children's lives. Parents have to found warrior spirits to become the traditional authority for their own children!

4. Lack of relevant data and a pattern of disinformation keep parents in a state of confusion.

For example, most parents I meet are unaware that the American Academy of Pediatrics (Aap) recommends one hour or less a day of all screen time (including Tv, video games, videos and computers) for children ages 3 - 18 and no screen time for babies and toddlers, birth to age 2. In fact, some experts think the Aap's suggestion is not strong enough. Researchers Dr. Robert Hill and Dr. Eduardo Castro, writing in Getting Rid of Ritalin: How Neurofeedback Can Successfully Treat attentiveness Deficit Disorder without Drugs (Hampton Roads Publishing Company, 2002), advise no television before the age of 5. They emphasize, "We can say with reliance that inordinate television, particularly in young children, causes neurological damage. Tv watching causes the brain to slow down, producing a constant pattern of low-frequency brainwaves consistent with Add behavior." Sounds radical. Yet, their points are important. Young brains are more admittedly conditioned by and more likely to become addicted to screen machines.

5. A screen-machine culture turns mass attentiveness to sensational and mindless content, while downplaying and often deriding prognosis and other higher-level conception processes.

A mechanism inside the lower part of the human brain admittedly causes us to look at the distorted or the weird. For example, variances in growth are tasteless in all living things. The surrounding culture, though, pushes parents to panic, worry and seek quick fixes if their children don't learn to read or write or count at the "right" time.

Addressing the Challenges Productively

Unfortunately, these challenges will be with as long as we live in a mass media culture. And they will probably get even more complicated as the digital revolution brings new forms of small screen technologies. As parents, though, we have lots of power to directly work on our children. In doing so, we indirectly change the Society we live in. mental children will make wise choices. Creative kids will enhance upon the current system when their turn comes.

The following seven guidelines don't add too much to our to-do list. Yet, they can profoundly work on who our children become.

Limit all screen time to five to seven hours weekly for children 18 and under.

Children who learn how to operate their screen time have time to found their personality and know themselves better than kids whose lives have become virtual. Plus, parenting kids who can operate their screen entertainment is a whole lot more fun. The challenges described above tend to dissolve when families spend more time with each other instead of with screen machines

Thinking of a weekly screen time funds works well for a lot of parents. That way there is less stress (and guilt!) when the kids zone out on occasion. The next day we can adjust with less or even no screen time. Using a weekly frame also helps youngsters understand the bigger photograph of how they spend their time.

Let our love guide us.

The physicist Humberto Maturano reminds us that "love is the only emotion that expands intelligence" (as quoted in Presence: Human Purpose and the Field of the hereafter by Peter Senge, et.al, The Society for Organizational Learning, 2003). Parental love is the constant that never changes over the years and that supports our wise choices. Our fierce love wants only the very best for our kids. Tapping into that love amid daily distractions catalyzes the vigor required to parent well in this crazy culture.

One efficient way it to examine what we love most about our children - their great questions, the way they treat their friends or care for their pets - whatever we know to be their unique gifts. production up a list of these can help. Then we can draw them out in daily conversations with our kids. This builds self-confidence and makes their self-respect blossom. A bonus is that when we share in this heart-energy with children, time seems to slow down and we sense a deep, truly sacred connection.

Choose relevant information.

Parental love can also lead to the relevant data that will have the most sustainable effects. One doesn't need a whole lot of information; rather one needs the right data that will make the leading differences. The books listed on the sidebar are a great place to start.

Clarify our parenting priorities.

Along with love and relevant information, I think getting very clear on our identity as parents can also be very helpful in navigating those six challenges. So often, the screen-machine world puts us in the position of speedily reacting, instead of thoughtfully responding, to situations. When we take quarterly intervals to explain our values - what we want for our kids and what's truly leading - we are much better prepared to guide children successfully straight through media minefields. A list of our parenting priorities on the refrigerator or family bulletin board directs children's attentiveness to what's truly in our hearts. How can they resist?

2. Discuss family photos -
Now comes the second part of the video… photos. You don’t want to have whole books of pictures to go through. A good estimate is 30. Have the subject look at each photo, reveal what is going on as if they are showing it to someone, and tell its story. Let them know that they do not need to show the print to the camera, and not to point to exact things, but to just reveal them in any information they wish. Once they have fulfilled, with the photos as them one more question…

If they could give one message or bit of advice to their generations of descendants to come, what would it be?

Now your source video is fulfilled, and you are ready to edit it.

3. Edit the video and photos -

Call your local video editing suite and retain an edit station. Let them know that you have a MiniDv digital tape that you want to edit video from, photos you want to contain and music to be added. At Video Kitchen in Louisville Kentucky, our basic edit station has a setup charge plus hourly. You need to bring in the videotape, the photos and a Cd with soft background music (we can provide the music if necessary). If all things went well and you have a good plan, it should take a concentrate of hours to complete the editing. We will put a title page at the beginning, replace sections of video with the photos and add the background music to the audio track.

1. The interview

Call the your local video production installation and setup a shoot. At Video Kitchen in Louisville Kentucky, our shoots contain a broadcast quality camcorder with an operator and a wireless microphone. Lights are extra. We will come to your location and make sure that all things is captured perfectly. There is a setup fee plus per hour and we will probably be onsite for an hour and a half.

2. The Edit session

Then set up an appointment at the video production installation to come in and sit with an editors at a digital computer non-linear edit station. At this station, we can add photos, music and titles with fades and dissolves. Then we would create your digital scholar and make one Dvd copy which is included in your shoot. The object is to get the central shape of the video to start talking. Think about it, there are times this person does start telling stories without end. It might be after a large Thanksgiving dinner, it might be late at night, it might be at the kitchen table, it may take a glass of something to reduce tension.

Sometimes it takes something to set the subject off, to get them on their soapbox, to tell the kids how it was back in the good old days. A curious argument of world events, the way kids dress today, the cost of gasoline may help getting the juices to flow.

There are some masters at this art. Two come to mind. Jim Lipton on Bravo in the Actor's Studio program interviews movie stars in a way that probes their personality and background without parallel. He has done his investigate and has questions on blue index cards. His questions not only are "tell me" but also open a subject by telling the actor something that Lipton already knows a dinky about, and the actor is invited to fill in the blanks, decide the conflict, complete the joke.

Charlie Rose is another superb talent at drawing information out of his guests. Same blue cards. Same recipe of request questions by manufacture a statement and curious the guest to enter into the conversation. He is on Pbs late most evenings. She and One Pelican at a Time and were featured in the Pbs Tampa (Wedu) special, GulfWatch. Pelican was nominated for a Global eBook Award and has won the Literary Classics Seal of Approval.

Nancy's travels take her extensively throughout the world, most particularly Africa. She is Us chair of a charity in Lamu, Kenya, that places girls in intermediate schools to allow them to supplementary their education. She and her husband live in Tampa and St. Louis.

I understand you were a university professor teaching classes about children's and young adult literature before you started writing. How did the leap from trainer to author come about?

I notion fleetingly about writing for children through my years as an academic, but it never seemed the right time. After teaching children's and young adult literature, though, the idea crystallized. The day after my granddaughter, Leah, was born, I wrote my first children's book, I Held You on the Day You Were Born. Since then I've never looked back, and those pent-up books flow faster than I would ever have expected. So, in a real way, Leah (who is now five) is the true catalyst behind my writing.

What makes you passionate about writing for children?

My whole scholastic occupation has been about children, from teaching young kids to teaching pre-service teachers. It was, I think, a natural segue to begin writing for them. The combination of my love of all things books and the real joy I feel about children and their growing awareness of new ideas led me to this passion.

Congratulations on the publication of your most recent children's photo book, Sea Turtle Summer. What was your inspiration for this story?

My morning walks on Clearwater Beach furnish me with so many ideas, particularly for the Bella and Britt Series. With Sea Turtle Summer, I walked by a cordoned off area of the beach that contained a sea turtle nest. The orange tape and the affixed state seal warning about the serious consequences of tampering began the process in my mind.

Clearwater Beach, always voted one of the three best beaches in the world, is a sea turtle's horror if she happens to lay her eggs there. There is so very much activity-from sun worshiping, to volleyball games, to kids' digging sandcastles (hatchlings cannot get over them), the question became defined. The tension was set up. All we needed was a sea turtle laying her eggs in an unfortunate place, and Bella and Britt were back on the job!

Tell us something about your protagonist, Bella. What kind of girl is she and why do you think young readers will love her?

Bella is a go-to girl. She thinks on her feet, is self-assured and makes things happen. Bella sees a question and spares no time in trying to solve it. She, in fact, will not take no for an answer. This attitude can be tricky and fraught for a child dealing with an adult world, but Bella perseveres. She is an empowered kid and as such, I hope she's a model for other kids who need that assurance.

What is the message of your book? Why do you think parents and educators should buy it for their children/students?

The message is two-fold. It is, of course, an ecology book for children. It will, I hope, help make children aware of the natural world and the accountability they have for it. It also, as I mentioned above, is a book about empowerment. There are times when children do have the best answers, and navigating an adult milieu can be a sensitive issue. I hope that giving children permission to empower themselves will not stop with ecology but will help them stay safe and make good choices.

I understand you get up at dawn daily and by 6am are already pounding away at your keyboard on the balcony of your beautiful, gulf-view Clearwater apartment. Tell us more about your writing program and writing process, especially for Sea Turtle Summer.

It is true that I'm at my computer colse to six each morning and has come to be a joke with friends who always look at the time I send or sass emails! I do find that time to be more productive for me than any other.

I've learned to parcel my days into bunches of hours, each bunch dealing with one area. For instance, my best creative writing is early in the morning. About mid-morning, I turn to marketing and do that any hours. Later in the day, I go back to writing, many times on a distinct manuscript. I tend to close about 5 Pm, but my computer is sometimes on my lap in the evening as well.

My blog does take some time almost daily. I publish new posts three times a week. I try to write them in groups and commonly have seven or eight ready to go. I enjoy blogging and find writing for adults helps keep my mind focused in a distinct way. In that regard, it's a worthwhile exercise.

What do you do when the words 'just won't come out'? Do you stay and force it until something begins happening on the page?

Free association is the name of that game for me. I don't fight writer's block anymore. Rather, practice or running errands or doing anything not linked to writing helps greatly. When I'm disengaged from writing is commonly when engagement happens. An idea, a notion, a nugget of a notion will pop into my consciousness and, as if by magic, the block is finished.

Do you have any tips for aspiring children's authors?

Yes! Don't write in a vacuum! Join a writer's group-immediately. It is the best thing you can do for yourself. The society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (Scbwi) is beyond needful for the new writer, and local groups are everywhere.

Realize you have to promote your own book, and you must do it constantly. The days of sitting back and letting your publishing house do it are over! I have a friend whose name you'd recognize here. She's had thirty two books children's books published. Recently she told me that she still gives one day a month to marketing.

On a regular basis, go straight through your house and ask yourself these same things again. Go straight through your closet, attic, garage, and basement and purge those items that do not add genuine joy, beauty, meaning or usefulness to your everyday life.

9. Reduce, reuse and recycle. A uncomplicated lifestyle, for me, is about reducing my urge to over-consume. It is about being kind to the environment. It is about spending less money on material things, so that I have more time and money to spend on memories with my family. Make changes that will help the environment and your pocketbook at the same time. Install water salvage kits on your toilet. Write on the back sides of paper. Use reusable packaging in your lunches. All these wee things beyond doubt do add up, and it is important to show our children how we can all be part of the solution.

10. Shop without your kids. I know that if I get a shopping cart at WalMart and I do not have a list, I will spend 0. If the kids are with me, I will spend even more. This is an additional one presuppose it makes sense to do your shopping online. You are less likely to purchase the incidentals.

11. Make sure that your prestige card is paying you back via an incentive program. I found a prestige card that allows me to earn points on my daily purchases toward our yearly vacation trip, including airline miles and hotel accommodations. Since most of my expenses each month are incurred at the grocery store, I found a card that rewards specifically for these types of purchases. Of course, you will need to make sure that you are paying off your equilibrium each and every month. 12. Lower your interest rates. If you are carrying a equilibrium on a prestige card, give the prestige card business a call to see if they will give you a lower rate. Sometimes, it is just that easy.

13. Shop around for insurance. The money you pay for auto assurance can vary greatly. Do some investigate to find out if you are getting the best rate.

14. Be wary of the affect of Tv commercials and print ads, especially on your children. We hear fewer cries of "I want that!" when we keep our kids programming to those channels that do not rely on advertising dollars, such as Pbs and Noggin.

15. Play "Time Warp." This is a technique I first learned from "My Monastery is a Minivan," by Denise Roy, and I use it quite a lot. It goes like this: When you are tempted to make a purchase, mentally fast-forward straight through the life of the item. For example, in her book, Roy thinks she needs new candleholders. She imagines spending time at the mall to find them, soon having to clean them, and then, years down the road, packing them in the giveaway box. She shirks the purchase and soon rediscovers the heirloom candleholders that are packed away right in her own home.

I like to play this "fast forward" technique in reverse, too, asking: What new clothes did I buy last season? (Sometimes, I can not remember). Where are those "I have to have it" items now?

16. Keep your mind on abundance. When you are thinking about money, it is beyond doubt important to get out of the poverty mindset. Too often, when we are focused on salvage money, we are living from a perspective that focuses on lack and scarcity, which tends to bring about more of the same. It has been beyond doubt helpful for me to make a conscious endeavor to see the world as infinitely abundant and to rest in the notion that my needs will be taken care of. This is commonly a uncomplicated matter of thinking more about what I *do* have than what I do not have.

All my days of penny-pinching have beyond doubt proven to me that it truly does not take money to make us happy. Many of my fondest memories have occurred in the smallest homes. My child's favorite playthings tend to be the reasonable items that were never designed to be toys at all. And it is the simple, everyday pleasures that are the sweetest, when enjoyed together.
